Melissa Brenneman

Melissa is a professional Trainer and GIS Analyst with thirteen years of progressive and responsible experience.

She graduated f rom Ball State University in Muncie, IN in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, and received her Master of Science degree in Biology from the same University in 1995.

Following graduation in 1995, Melissa worked for ESRI, Inc. in Redlands, CA. Melissa held positions as instructor, course development manager, educational specialist, and ESRI Virtual Campus Content Manager.

In 2001, Melissa left ESRI to pursue GIS experience in a field that would allow her to utilize her education in Biology. She was employed by the Redlands Institute of the University of Redlands as a Senior GIS Analyst.

While with the Institute, she worked on a variety of projects. She was the Cartographic Manager for the Salton Sea Atlas, a full color coffee table style atlas communicating issues and maps to the Salton Sea community. Her experience as an ESRI instructor and course manager qualified her to develop and present a GIS Technology Management Seminar to top executives of five utility distribution and transmission companies in the United Arab Emirates. She also played a large role in projects within the local East Valley community. She assisted the Redlands Police Department with their East Valley COMPASS (Community Mapping, Planning & Analysis for Safety Strategies) Program. She also assisted First Five San Bernardino (also known as the Children and Families Commission) with strategic planning efforts to guide the allocation of their funds. In addition, she played a large role as Senior GIS Analyst and Team Leader for the Desert Tortoise Project.

In 2003, Melissa founded TopoWorks. Since founding TopoWorks, she has continued to work on a variety of GIS projects as well as teach ESRI Introduction and Programming courses.

She provided key project management, needs assessment, database design, and programming services in support of the Desert Tortoise Monitoring Progam (of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service). Specifically, she developed and implemented a suite of QA/QC tools to create a final quality-controlled Desert Tortoise Line Distance Sampling database. Melissa also provided analysis and cartographic support for a variety of projects including planning efforts of Big Brothers Big Sisters, fire mapping for the San Diego Union-Tribue, environmental reports and a prototype display for the World Bank Headquarters in Washington, D.C. In addition to the QA/QC tools, Melissa developed programs and tools for ArcMap and ArcGIS Engine. She developed ArcMap tools that allowed municipal governments to perform specific queries of their GIS data based on supporting data from a stand alone Microsoft Access database, and she developed ArcGIS Engine samples for displaying temporal tracking data. She also continued to assist the Redlands Insitute with several projects including strategic planning efforts for First 5 San Bernardino, water quality monitoring for Imperial Valley, CA, development and delivery of a GIS course designed specifically for the Desert Tortoise community, and precipitation modeling in support of the Institute's Desert Tortoise Project.
